Veterans of
Foreign Wars (VFW) Elwood Perkins Post 8336 was chartered on September 19,
1946 in Overton, Nevada. In 2004, the Post's location was changed from
Overton to Moapa Valley to reflect member demographics, with members
from Overton, Logandale, and Moapa.
The post is named to honor Elwood Perkins, a native of Moapa
Valley who was killed in action in Metz, France, on October 10, 1944, during World War II.
He is interned in Pioneer Cemetery, Overton, Nevada The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Elwood Perkins Post 8336
was chartered on October 19, 1949. The Post and
its Ladies Auxiliary are very involved in the local community through its own
VFW programs as well as the Rotary Club, Senior Center, Strategic Planning
Committee, the Old Logandale School Historical and Cultural Center (OLSHACS),
Lost Cities Museum, and the churches of the valley. Several
times a year, the Post and its Ladies Auxiliary distribute "Buddy
Poppies" to raise funds to support needy veterans and their families. The
Post, with Auxiliary assistance, annually sponsors the high school "Voice
of Democracy" and middle school "Patriot's
Pen" essay contests and selects a "Citizenship
Education Teacher of the Year" from the local elementary, middle, and
high school. The Post annually honors local law enforcement,
fire fighter, EMT, and health care
worker,
who compete
for national
recognition.

The Post also selects a local Eagle Scout for the VFW's "Scout of the Year" award. The Ladies Auxiliary annually sponsors the "Patriotic Art" contest, open to grades 9 though 12.
